Finding Purpose in Creative Vocation
I’m approaching Lent a little differently this year.
I’m a practicing Catholic. It’s one of my many flaws. Today, we enter the Lenten season.
I’ve been creatively burned out lately, so this is my first post of the year. I intended to write something for the beginning of the year but fell into a dark place I’m still climbing out of. So far, I would call 2020 my year of cautious optimism.
Before I lose track of my thoughts, allow me to explain.
It’s common to consider Lent as a season of repentance, reconciliation, and loss. And on the surface, it is. After all, if you’ve been avoiding the confessional booth all year, this is the time of year you are supposed to “catch up.” You give up something you love as a sort of fast. The non-creative give up chocolate or sex or whatever.
More importantly, you can dedicate yourself to a spiritual task. You can provide charity to those in need, visit the sick, or make a vow to say the rosary or read the scriptures daily. Those tasks are supposed to grow your faith as well as make an impact on our world.
Lent is more about the spiritual journey and reflection than asceticism. But don’t quote me on that; I’m just some chick who carries a camera.
